TechED 2013 Ramp – SQL Server 2012 PDW
I’m very excited about being having the honor of discussing the changes and new features of SQL Server 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse at TechED. SQL Server 2012 PDW is a one of a kind where in single evolution performance has improved dramatically while cost drop precipitously.
My presentation is titled Large Scale Data Warehousing and Big Data with SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse V2. It is scheduled for Monday June 3rd, 2013 @ 4:45 PM CDT. I had a different title, but it got changed in the vetting process. I guarantee you that a committee came up with that title, no way it was the work of a single person. Anyway, I digress…
The presentation can effectively be described in two acts: Architecture and Cool New Stuff.
- The Hardware Specs
- Disk Substorage and Scalability Discussion
- Dell and HP Configurations
Cool New Features
- Clustered Columnstore Indexes
- Resource Classes for Priority Access
- Polybase (Hadoop Integration)
- T-SQL Compatibility Improvements
I’ll finish the session by conveying war stories from what we’ve seen in the field. I’ll discuss what it is about SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse that is compelling to the business. I’ll examine the kind of problems it solves and provide real world examples of ELT and query improvements that will blow your mind. Finally I’ll provide details around how our Business Intelligence stack integrates with SQL Server PDW.
How are we going to get all that in during a 75 minute session? I’m going to talk as fast as my Midwestern heritage will allow….which isn’t all that fast. A second tactic will be to be concise, something I’m at which I’m better.
Even if you think you know SQL Server PDW, if you haven’t been to a session on PDW V2 then I recommend attending. See you there!
