PDW Appliance Update News
Microsoft announced earlier this week the release of the Appliance Update 2 (AU2) for SQL Server 2008 R2 Parallel Data Warehouse (SQL PDW). Considering that SQL PDW was released just a few months ago, the pace of development is astonishing. Included in AU2 are new connectors for SAP Business Objects and Informatica. Adding the the connectors already developed for Microstrategy, customers now have range of Business Intelligence offerings to choose from that leverage SQL PDW. Additionally, AU2 added the ability for multi-statement batches, local variables, temporary tables, conditional logic, and control flow statements. For more information, see this blog post from the SQL Server Development Team.
Additionally Microsoft announced the Community Technology Preview of Hadoop connectors for SQL PDW. These connectors will allow customers to quickly transfer data from Hadoop to SQL PDW, essentially making SQL PDW a hub for analytics in your greater Big Data strategy. This CTP will help catch Microsoft up with EMC Greenplum and IBM Neteeza on the subject of Hadoop connectors. Both of these vendors have already integrated Hadoop connectivity into their products.
Finally, Microsoft announced that Dell has come on officially as a SQL PDW partner. The key for our customers is the ability to now choose between HP and Dell architectures for the SQL PDW installation. The new dell appliance will reportedly scale to 600 TB. I tried to find additional information on the Dell website, but so far they have not posted any material. I will continue checking and provide details once I have them.
